2006 Grizzly Hare Scrambles at Riverdale Raceway

Sunday 27 August 2006 was the day. Riverdale Raceway just to the east of grand Mount St. Helens was the location. Heat and dust were the order of the day, and the races were the Grizzly Hare Scrambles. We promised no mud this year. After several years at Longview we had sunken in the mud one too many times . . . we promised, and we delivered! It was a dog day for sure; combine the heat with the volcanic ash and our racers were guaranteed NO MUD.

The long course racers went first, starting at 9:30am and riding for two and a half hours. The AA group did a LeMans start, running at full tilt in full riding gear, to be the first rider to kick his bike over and launch into the woods. The second and third waves started shortly thereafter, holding their fenders and jumping aboard as the horn sounded. Short coursers started at 1:00pm in waves, riding for one and a half hours.

The course offered variety: open sandy flat-track, raw meadowland, a sand drag, a full lap on the MX course, tight woods, less tight woods, and a pleasantly brief rocky downhill.
